Hi, we’re KIPO! And we create stuff — or we’re a multidisciplinary design studio, so to speak. This is the story of our brand and phylosophy. But, before starting with «once upon a time…» let us just say that our goal as a design studio is to create things that tell you a story. Not exactly objects that speak — we don’t sell headphones — but things that are able to truly express something and stand for their values, whether that thing is an object you can touch and “feel” or a website, a product branding or maybe a video worth a thousand words.
So, that’s pretty much what we do for a living and also the reason of KIPO’s name. It comes from Inca’s writing system based on an object called quipu. Yes, that fellows didn’t have a writing system based on characters written on stone or paper. Anyway we don’t want to get technical or anything, Wikipedia has a great article we encourage you to read. Let’s just say that a quipu is a rope with many strings tied to it. Depending on the number and shape of the knots tied on the strings, Incas were able to record history, math, astronomy and everything else they needed. Brilliant, isn’t it?

Quipus — or khipos — were officially the first “talking objects” ever and our name comes right from the phonetic simplification of that word of the quechua tongue.
We wanted our logo to show this strong historic tie with quipus. The stretched “I” of the logotype represents one of the strings of the quipu. But that wasn’t enough for us, that’s when the llama came in! Llamas aren’t just the Inca-est symbol but also the very origin of quipus that were weaved with llamas wool. Since quipus were heavy to transport across the Andes, empire officials carried them on llamas back, letting quipus descend on the animal hips, in the same position where we placed our logotype on the llama.
